Lesson 4: Inventory Management

If this is your first time selling online, you may notice some strange phrases here, so we’ll go over them fast.

  • SKU. A stock keeping unit (SKU) is a device that keeps track of and manages inventories for specific items and variations. Create a system of numbers or letters that allows you to quickly identify the item you’re looking for (for example, MHS-HEH indicates that it’s the medium hot sauce Hot Enough Habenero).
  • A barcode. If you’re reselling things or eventually want to add scannable bar codes to your items for simpler inventory management, bar codes (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.) are commonly utilized. We may keep it blank for the time being because we make and sell our own items.
  • Quantity. This is the amount of a certain product that you have on hand. If you have numerous locations that carry inventory set up in Shopify, they’ll show up here. In my instance, I’m starting off with a small batch of 10 bottles for each spicy sauce and keeping inventory in my own place.
